Setting the correct angle on your Scraper Plane

One of the best features of the large scraper plane shown below is the ability to change the angle of the blade for different tasks. At the factory the blade is set so it angles forward about 15 degrees from the vertical position. This results in a smooth cut with short, paper thin shavings. I use this angle for cleaning up machine marks on straight-grained wood. Tilting the blade forward even more will take a deeper cut. This angle will produce long curls, almost like a low-angle plane. You could use this angle for smoothing an uneven surface, like a glued-up tabletop. Setting the blade to a vertical position decreases the depth of the cut. This will produce fine scrapings, almost like sawdust. I use this setting when smoothing wood with highly figured grain.

Here’s the other design I came up with for a cutting board. It seemed fitting for my father who likes to entertain and likes to serve cheese and drink wine.

just a quick sketch of my wineglass cutting board design.

Again a good cutting board will be something that can be around for ever so it’s a good investment in time and effort to make it right once. Your kids and grand kids will appreciate it for a long time.

My plan for the wine and cheese chopping block calls for Hard Maple, Black Walnut, and Purple Heart woods for contrast and visual interest. Again it will be an end-grain cutting board because it’s better for your knives if you use it a lot.. and I use the things I make as much as possible.

I really liked these plans when I found them because the reminded me so much of the cutting board I have that my father made a long time ago, many years before I was born. And although the shape is a bit different it still has the same concept.

When I was building the Christmas present step stool I looked everywhere for design inspiration and the how to of making a really cool and structurally sound joint. Some of the woodworking ability out there is absolutely amazing and although I ended up making my own custom twisted-ish dovetail style joint I very much appreciate all the great work out there. So I’ll stop rambling now and let you see for yourself what kinds of awesome dovetail joinery I found.

These plans are derived from the Chinese game “ch’I ch’ae pan” or “Seven-Board of Cunning”. First made in the time of the Ch’ing Emporer Chia Chi’ing (1796- 1820). How cool is that? Instructions should be really easy to follow. Included are the layout for the puzzle itself and a storage box that slides the puzzle out.

Free Download – plans for a kid’s step stool project. Sturdy, bright colors, functional.. what more could you want?! These are just some plans I found online somewhere a while back. Yea, so the picture isn’t as cool of a stepstool .. the download file for the plans is a much better looking duck and a lot sturdier of a construction plan.
